Hi Monica
You can checkout this post on backing for embroidery. For hand embroidering small motifs on a good fabric – no need for backing, in my opinion. Best wishes

I’m beginning to embroider by hand and was wondering if I need any sort of backing material or is it not necessary? I will be doing hand embroidery on come cocktail napkins.

But it will be great if you can put reference images for each and every thing for better understanding as just text and no images makes it really hard to know what exactly are you talking about.

Hi Jean
Thanks. Cotton, Silk, linen all are suitable to be framed. Just Use acid-free boards and do not make the fabric touch glass top, if using. This article may help you – https://sewguide.com/how-to-frame-and-display-your-embroidery-work/

What would be the best fabric for this? Thank you for the fantastic article!

Hi Maria
A loose weave cloth called monks cloth is used for looping the ribbons ; learn more here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monk%27s_cloth
or you can ask for Huckaback cloth
Thanks

Great info. I am wondering what is the fabric (that seems scored in lines (vertically) used or vagonite ribbon embroidery?
